What Is Jaw Surgery?
Overview of Orthognathic Surgery
Jaw surgery, also known as orthognathic surgery, corrects irregularities of the jaw bones and repositions the jaws and teeth to improve function and facial appearance.
Conditions Treated
Common indications include severe underbite or overbite, open bite, facial asymmetry, sleep apnoea related to jaw structure, difficulty chewing or speaking, and jaw pain or TMJ disorders.
Types of Jaw Surgery
Upper Jaw Surgery (Le Fort Osteotomy)
The upper jaw (maxilla) is repositioned to correct overbite, open bite, or crossbite. This procedure improves both bite alignment and facial profile.
Lower Jaw Surgery (Sagittal Split Osteotomy)
The lower jaw (mandible) is moved forward or backward to correct underbite or overbite, improving chewing function and facial balance.
Combined Jaw Surgery
Both upper and lower jaws are repositioned simultaneously for complex skeletal discrepancies, maximising functional and aesthetic outcomes.
